Race 1 – DEDERANG HOTEL, ALPINE ANGUS ELK’S HUNTING & FISHING STORE TROPHY 1 - 1000 metres:
Fidia jumped away awkwardly and lost ground.
Approaching the 600m, Fidia commenced to lay-out and bumped Sunpoint and subsequently carried that gelding out wider on the track.
Race 2 – SIMPSONS LIVESTOCK TRANSPORT TROPHY (2) HANDICAP - 1350 metres:
Stewards ordered the withdrawal of Belles Spell, which had also been entered in Race 1 on today’s program, at 11.15am. Trainer Mr H. Bacon explained to Stewards that he had not scratched this morning as a precaution in case the race fell away in which case he would have considered racing the mare. Stewards accepted his explanation.
Prior to leaving the mounting yard Egyptian Son bucked and dislodged its rider Mr A. Gauci, Mr Gauci was examined by ambulance staff and passed fit to ride prior to remounting.
Race 3 – BRIAN UNTHANK, HAWKINS BUILDERS & MAXIMUM WEALTH TROPHY 3 - 1650 metres:
Prior to the declaration of correct weight Mr C. Jones, rider of Like Nugget, requested to view the video footage of the start of the race as he believed his mount may have been denied a far start. After viewing the video of the start Stewards deemed Like Nugget to be a runner, and declared correct weight. It was established that while one of the gates had been marginally slow to open, it was apparent that Like Nugget had an unobstructed opportunity to jump away.
In the middle stages of the race, Humour Us was obliged to race wide without cover.
Near the 600m Riverina Racer, which was laying in, had to be steadied off the heels of Pedal, which shifted out slightly.
Shortly after this Like Nugget had to change course to the outside of Riverina Racer, which commenced to weaken quickly.
Stewards questioned Mr C. Jones, rider of Like Nugget, as to why he got out of his ground in the early stages of the race. Mr Jones stated to Stewards that after racing keenly up the hill he eased his mount slightly and in a short space of time found himself to be several lengths behind the second last horse. He also stated that from this point he urged his mount forward but added that the gelding did not respond immediately to his riding, and then only battled on in the straight. Stewards noted his explanation and advised him that in future they would expect him to do more in the early stages of the race to ensure that his mounts did not get out of their ground to the extent that happened on this occasion.
Race 4 – HOWMAN’S AG SERVICES MAIDEN HANDICAP - 1000 metres:
Bogong Belle, which had not raced for a period in excess of two years, was examined by the clubs veterinary surgeon and passed fit to race.
Anthony’s Way jumped away awkwardly and lost ground.
After passing the 500m Bogong Belle commenced to hang out and continued to do so for the remainder of the race. Shortly after this, when attempting to correct his mount, the saddle on Bogong Belle slipped leaving its rider Mr C. Jones at a disadvantage for the remainder of the race.
When questioned by Stewards Ms L. Collins, rider of Anthony’s Way stated that she was unaware of how far out of her ground she had got in the early stages of the race. Stewards advised Ms Collins that while they accepted that she was still inexperienced and only having her third ride in a race they would expect her in future to recognise her need to put her mount into the race earlier than she did on this occasion.
Race 5 – MILESTONE DEDERANG CUP - 1650 metres:
Tintaldra was slow to begin.
Mr G. Brunsdon, rider of Tintaldra, was fined the sum of $100 under the provisions of AR137(a)(5)(i) and (ii) in that he used his whip in a forehand manner on ten occasions, four of them consecutive, prior to the 100m. In reaching penalty Stewards took into account that Mr Brunsdon had not previously been penalised for this offence.
Race 6 – ALPINE SHIRE & NORTH EAST ROAD SAFE FLYING - 1000 metres:
Prior to the declaration of correct weight, Mr H Maclean representing Ms C. Faithful trainer of fourth placed gelding Little Bunda, requested to view the photo finish for third place. After viewing the official photo Mr Maclean was satisfied with the judges placings. Also prior to correct weight Mr C. Jones rider of Mulhim, requested to view the Stewards footage in the straight with a view to lodging an objection. After viewing the footage Mr Jones did not continue with his objection and Stewards declared correct weight.
On jumping away Rosecoloredglasses knuckled and lost ground.
Near the 100m Mulhim was held up for clear running and then had to change course to the inside of Little Bunda to obtain a neat run. Shortly after this, Mulhim was briefly hampered when Little Bunda rolled in slightly under pressure.
Over the concluding stages of the race Our Purrfect Angel had to be steadied when Rosecoloredglasses shifted in slightly.
Mr A. Gauci, rider of Malebo Magic, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under the provisions of AR137A in that approaching the 500m he permitted his mount to shift in when not sufficiently clear of Our Purrfect Angel, causing that mare to be checked severely. A. Gauci was suspended for a period to commence at Midnight 8 January and to expire Midnight 26 January, a total of three picnic race meetings. In reaching this penalty Stewards took into consideration that A. Gauci had not previously been penalised for careless riding.
