Other Comments / Explanations:

After 4mm of overnight rain, Stewards amended the track rating from Good (3) to Dead (4) at 12.45pm

Race 1 –GREAT AUSTRALIAN ICECREAMERY maiden handicap - 1600 metres:

The explanation of Mr Mark Stephenson, trainer of Caratime, as to the reason for the gelding’s late arrival on course was accepted. Mr Stephenson was advised that in similar circumstances, he would be expected to make greater efforts to ensure that either the Club or the Stewards were aware of his progress to avoid a decision being contemplated by Stewards in respect to the scratching of the horse for non arrival on the course.

Caratime was slow to begin. Shortly after the start, Bank Guaranteed was tightened for room between Alcosta, which shifted out, and Pirate’s Maid which shifted in. In the early stages of the race, Pirate’s Maid had a tendency to overrace. After`passing the 1400 metres, the saddle on Miss Joey slipped forward, leaving Mr Michael Fitzgerald, rider of the mare, at a disadvantage for the remainder of the race.

Stewards spoke to Ms Tracey Johnson, rider of the second placed gelding Jiminy Terror, regarding the nature of her use of the whip on the gelding. Ms Johnson was severely reprimanded and advised that on this occasion, regardless of the fact that she was placed in the race, her whip use was bordering on excessive, and that a repetition may lead to stronger action being taken.

Race 2 – COUNTRY CLUB HOTEL trophy (2) handicap - 1600 metres:

En route to the barriers, Mr Michael Fitzgerald was dislodged from Burramine Legend, before quickly remounting. After being examined by the Club’s Doctor, Mr Fitzgerald was passed fit to ride. Shortly after the start, Burramine Legend had to be steadied off the heels of Scullys Luck, which shifted out slightly. After racing ungenerously in the early stages of the race, Scullys Luck raced wide without cover in the middle stages of the race in an attempt to improve its position.

Near the 200 metres, Burramine legend, which had a tendency to lay in under pressure, had to be eased when Kenbest (Mr Paul Koumis) shifted out. After being straightened, Kenbest again shifted out, which resulted in Burramine Legend having to change course to avoid that gelding’s heels. Mr Paul Koumis was advised that while he did initially stop riding, his decision to then resume riding with the whip when shifting ground had caused Stewards some concern, and that in future he would be expected to make far greater effort to ensure that other runners did not suffer interference.

Race 3 – TI TREE FARM PRODUCE open trophy handicap - 1600 metres:

Carlton Game was obliged to race wide in the middle stages of the race.

Mr Kane Harris, rider of the third placed gelding All Our Troubles, was advised by Stewards that despite the clear margin to the second horse, he would in future be expected to ride his mount hands and heels right to the finish line.

Race 4 – FOODWORKS TROPHY (1) handicap - 1200 metres:

Illegal Entry jumped in the air and lost ground. Barravore Lady also jumped away awkwardly.

Running to the 200 metres, Princess Of Hearts, which was racing tightly to the inside of Rainbow True, had to be eased to avoid the heels of Illegal Entry (Mr Paul Koumis) which shifted out. Mr Paul Koumis was reprimanded and advised that had the severity of the interference been even slightly greater, more severe action would have been taken.

Rainbow True had a tendency to lay in over the concluding stages of the race.

Race 5 – YEA PHARMACY MAIDEN HANDICAP - 1200 metres:

Stewards accepted the explanation of Mr Kane Harris as to the reason he was declared as the rider for both Overindulge and Atwell in this race. In taking no action against Mr Harris, Stewards took into account that the error had been corrected, and a replacement rider procured for Atwell well before the meeting had commenced.

Atwell jumped away awkwardly, and then threw its head in the air when overracing.

Cliffy’s Apparation and Bunchen were both slow to begin.

Encounter Bay raced greenly in the early and middle stages of the race, and near the 800 metres, had to be restrained when attempting to take charge of its rider.

Mr Leigh Taylor, rider of the fourth placed filly Atwell, was advised by Stewards that in future, he would be expected to ensure that all his mounts are ridden out right to the line, which was not the case on this occasion. Stewards also advised Mr Taylor, that had they believed that the placings had been affected, further action may have been taken.

Race 6 – WHITES RIDING SCHOOL OF BULLEEN open trophy handicap - 1200 metres:

After speaking with Mr Bernard Barry, trainer of Iquitos, who had attempted to scratch the gelding at around 8.30am on the morning of the race, it became clear that a misunderstanding had occurred in relation to scratching arrangements at picnic meetings. As the horse had not been brought to the course, Stewards ordered the withdrawal of Iquitos at 3.20pm. Mr Barry was advised that in future, he would be required to scratch prior to 8am on race morning.

After being loaded into its barrier stall, Dis Reply became fractious and then became cast. After being removed from the stalls, Dis Reply was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon, who determined that the gelding was unfit to race. Dis Reply was withdrawn by Stewards acting on veterinary advice at 5.09pm.

Subsequent to the running of the race, Stewards declared correct weight subject to the following deductions: All moneys wagered for a win and / or place and concession betting on Dis Reply to be refunded. All successful bets prior to the time of withdrawal of Dis Reply are subject to the following deductions in the dollar from the face value of the ticket: win bets 23 cents, place bets 18 cents, winning concession bets 22 cents, and doubles bets 23 cents. All monies bet after the Stewards declaration of withdrawal to be paid at face value of the ticket.

Mr Anthony Bolden, trainer of Dis Reply, was advised that a warning would be placed on the gelding in respect to its barrier behaviour, and prior to starting again he would need to be in receipt of a barrier certificate for the gelding.

Conjoin jumped away awkwardly.

Near the 1000 metres, Sigvaldi had to be eased when Energised (Mr Geoff Brunsdon) shifted in. Mr Brunsdon was severely reprimanded, and advised that he would be expected to do far more to protect his fellow riders in future.

In the straight, Conjoin broke down and failed to finish after being pulled up by its rider, Mr Shane McGovern. Subsequent to the event, an examination of Conjoin by Club’s Veterinary Surgeon revealed that the mare had fractured both sesamoid bones in the near foreleg and had to be humanely euthanased.

Mr Kane Harris, rider of the third placed mare, Cougar Lass, was advised by Stewards that while in their opinion the placings had not been affected, and that he had failed to ride his mount out only for the final stride of the race, he would be expected in future to ensure that he rides his mounts out right to the finish line.

Stewards questioned Mr Leigh Taylor, rider of Burlington Academy, in respect to his ride on the gelding during the early and middle stages of the race. Mr Taylor stated that he was instructed to allow the gelding to drop back early, as it was first up from a spell and generally is suited over longer distances, and has no early pace. He also stated that the gelding improved only for a few strides when ridden in the straight, before weakening. Stewards advised Mr Taylor that they were concerned in the early stages of the race, when Burlington Academy was allowed to drift back some six lengths from the second last horse, while little attempt was being made to stay in touch, and further that little effort was being made to put the horse into the race until after passing the 400 metres. Stewards conceded that the horse improved only slightly before weakening at the end of the race, but advised Mr Taylor that he must ride all his mounts  in a manner which ensures that they are given every possible chance in the race, as well as ensuring that that there is no room for query.
