Misunderstanding

Race 1 – Happy New Year Open Trophy Handicap - 2000 metres:

Mr. Leigh Taylor, rider of Fenaughty Lad, reported to the stewards that the gelding over-raced in the middle stages of the race and then approaching the 400m Fenaughty Lad dipped, became unbalanced, and Mr. Taylor dropped his whip.

Rounding the home turn Ripsnorter Ridge laid out.

Mr. Adam Bodey, rider of Scarface Claw, which performed below expectations stated to the stewards that the gelding failed to settle during the running of the race and failed to respond to his riding around the home corner and in the early part of the straight. Mr. A Bodey accidently dropped his whip near the 200m.
A veterinary examination of Scarface Claw revealed no apparent abnormality.

Race 2 – VBA/CRV Picnic Racing Sprinters Series Heat 3 - 1000 metres:

Grand Legend jumped away awkwardly.

Bramble Blitz was slow to begin.

Rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight Grand Legend was held up for clear running and then dissappointed for clear running, between Red Rolls Royce and Sunday Slippers.

Race 3 – Phillip Island & San Remo Advertiser Trophy (1) Handicap - 1000 metres:

Rounding the home turn Ainsleigh Girl had a tendecy to lay out.

Steward’s accepted the explaination given by Mr. Robert Lont for presenting Ronrenza at Woolamai today not shod correctly behind.

Race 4 – Polish Pricess Maiden Handicap - 1500 metres:

As the gates opened Immerse lost it’s footing behind and was slow to begin.

Russian Jester had a tendency to over-race in the early and middle stages of the race. In the straight Russian Jester was tightened for room on a number of occassions by Zardoz when that gelding shifted in near the 100m and again near the winning post.

Mr. Michael Fitzgerald, rider of Dolphin Bliss, stated to the stewards that running out of the straight on the first occasion he was tightened for room to the inside of Jan Bleu which shifted in on a number of occassions, when that mare was racing ungenerously.

Race 5 – San Remo Hotel Open Trophy Handicap - 1500 metres:

Acting on a confirmed telephone call from trainer Ms. Charmaine Barnes who was not able to scratch Our Desertcrossing prior to 8am due to family demands, stewards ordered the withdrawal of that gelding at 8:32am. Stewards severely reprimanded Ms. C Barnes and notified her that she may be penalised for failing to scratch in accordance with the rules, in future.

Leica Reason, which ran at the Healesville meeting on Saturday 10 January, was examined by the Club’s veterinary surgeon prior to the running of this race and passed fit to start.

Race 6 – Island Beau Trophy (1) Handicap - 1700 metres:

Stewards accepted the explaination given by Mr. Troy Kilgower, representing trainer Mr. John Kilgower, for presenting Wild Billy on course not shod in accordance with the Racing Victoria Ltd regulations.

Upon jumping away Port Phillip threw it’s head in the air and lost ground.

Near the 600m Agent Frost (Ms. D Waymouth) was tightened for room, brushed the running rail and became unbalanced when Wild Billy (Mr. John Fitzgerald) was taken in by Catino Belle (Mr. Kane Harris) when that mare shifted in abruptly. Mr. K Harris stated to the stewards that Catino Belle slipped rounding the turn and shifted inwards in an attempt to regain it’s footing. During this incident Wild Billy had to be severely checked and lost ground.

Approaching the 150m Wild Billy had some difficulty obtaining a clear run.
