Misunderstanding

Race 1 – Lisa Dalgleish Birthday Maiden Hcp - 1600 metres:

Come The Day was slow to begin.

Shane McGovern was found guilty of a charge of careless riding, the careless riding being that near the 1400m he permitted his mount to shift in when not sufficiently clear of The Jolly Swagman, thereby taking that gelding in onto Avian Prince and Diaddison, which resulted in Diaddison having to be checked, Avian Prince being severely hampered and The Jolly Swagman having to be severely checked. Shane McGovern’s license to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence midnight 26 January 2009 and conclude midnight 8 February 2009, a period of 3 picnic race meetings.

As a result of this incident Waratah Pirate which was following accidently clipped the heels of Diaddison and almost fell, and Dolphin Bliss accidently clipped the heels of The Jolly Swagman.

Kane Harris rider of Waratah Pirate (3 placegetter) was issued with a severe reprimand and reminded of his obligations under the rules with respect to excessive use of the whip.

A veterinary examination of The Jolly Swagman subsequent to the event revealed no apparent abnormality.

A veterinary examination of Diaddison revealed the gelding to have been galloped on, suffering abrasions to the near-hind leg.

Race 2 – Gerry McInerney Memorial Trophy Race (1) - 1600 metres:

When questioned regarding the improved performance of Jiminy Terror today Mark Anderson, trainer of the Jiminy Terror, stated that the gelding was not suited to the firm track conditions at Alexandra on the 17 January as compared to the more favourable track conditions today.

Race 3 – Draffin Walker Open Trophy - 1050 metres:

Nil report.

Race 4 – Kings Creek Hotel Balnarring Cup - 2000 metres:

Geoff Brunsdon, rider of The Lion King, was severely reprimanded for excessive use of the whip on that gelding in the straight.

Race 5 – Rosebud RSL Open Trophy - 1200 metres:

Acting on a confirmed telephone call from trainer Ms Kerry Eveleigh, trainer of Doraemon who stated that their float had broken down enroute to the course and that they would not arrive on course by the required time, stewards ordered the withdrawal of Doraemon at 11.35am.

Courtgilchrist was slow to begin.

Race 6 – Fresh Feast Meats Trophy Race (1) - 1200 metres:

Bold Bull, which had dislodged it’s rider Leigh Taylor during the preliminary and galloped a distance prior to being caught, was a late scratching on veterinary advice at 4:44pm. The Stewards ordered in relation to betting with bookmakers the following betting deductions in the dollar from the face value of the ticket – Win bets 3 cents, Place bets 4 cents and Quinella bets 8 cents. All monies bet after the Stewards declaration of withdrawal to be paid at the face value of ticket.
