Race 1 – been printing maiden handicap - 1200 metres: Acting on a report from the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who advised Stewards that Telba Star had injured itself en route to the course and was unfit to run, Stewards ordered the withdrawal of that gelding at 12.38pm. As betting had just commenced and no bets had been taken on Telba Star, no deductions applied. Trainer L. Ablett was notified that he must be in receipt of a veterinary certificate prior to Telba Star racing again.

Encore Rose, which was having its first start for eighteen months, underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and was passed fit to run.

Carrawyanda began awkwardly. Our Lady of Jugah was slow to begin.

Carrawyanda had a tendency to lay in in the straight.

Ms J. Moroni, rider of Manazab, explained to the stewards that she was unable to rider her mount out in her normal manner as the gelding became unbalanced from the 100 metres, which resulted in her becoming unbalanced. Ms Moroni added that her whip became entangled in the breastplate shortly after passing the 100 metres.

A post-race veterinary examination of Encore Rose, which performed poorly, revealed no abnormalities.

Race 2 – lockie campbell memorial open trophy race handicap - 1200 metres:  On jumping away, Coolibah Kid threw its head up resulting in its rider J. Fitzgerald becoming unbalanced and the gelding losing considerable ground.

Near the 900 metres, Honstar had to be eased off the heels of Jugah Star.

Approaching the 100 metres, Jugah Star had to be eased when Honstar shifted in under pressure.

S. Wicks, who was dislodged from Schumpeter on pulling up, was examined by the club’s doctor and passed fit to fulfil his remaining engagements.

Race 3 – the field group maiden handicap - 1650 metres:  Acting on a report from the club’s farrier who advised Stewards that Ruby Hope was unsatisfactorily plated for racing and, as the mare was unable to be replated due to time constraints, stewards order the withdrawal of Ruby Hope at 1.48pm. Trainer Ms. C. Leahy was issued with a severe reprimand and notified that all her runners must be plated in accordance with the rules in future.

Approaching the 100 metres, Jan Bleu shifted in under pressure. Miss Identity proved difficult to ride in the straight due to the mare racing ungenerously.

Race 4 – red labels / $2000 heat 5 crv picnic racing middle distance series - 1650 metres:

Dover was slow to begin. Bridges of Babylon stood flat-footed when the gates opened and lost considerable ground. Trainer Ms M. Cid was notified that a warning would be placed against Bridges of Babylon and should the gelding perform in a similar manner in future, further action may be taken.

Near the 600 metres, Dis Reply had to be eased when racing tight to the inside of Cantemerle, which shifted in slightly when laying in.

After passing the 100 metres, Dis Reply changed stride and rider P. Koumis lost the use of his whip for a short distance.

Race 5 – u-neek bending open trophy race handicap - 1650 metres:  After confirming the intentions of Mr R. Lont, trainer of Leica Reason which was engaged for races four and five, stewards ordered the withdrawal of the gelding from race five at 12.06pm. Mr Lont was severely reprimanded for failing to scratch Leica Reason by the prescribed time and notified he must scratch his runners in accordance with the rules in future.

When questioned regarding their riding tactics on Captain Cosmic and Turning Yallah in the middle stages when those horses established a substantial lead, J. Fitzgerald (Captain Cosmic) explained to the stewards that he had been instructed to lead, which is his mount’s usual racing pattern. Mr Fitzgerald added he was unaware that he had opened up a considerable lead however the gelding was always travelling well within itself. Ms Andrews (Turning Yallah) stated to stewards that Turning Yallah usually races in a lead to handy position and the gelding was reluctant to settle in the early stages. For this reason she elected to let Turning Yallah stride to the outside of Captain Cosmic after turning out of the straight. Ms Andrews conceded that she made an error of judgement by allowing Turning Yallah to race to the outside of Captain Cosmic and as a result Turning Yallah compounded badly from the 600 metres. While stewards accepted J. Fitzgerald’s explanation, they notified Ms Andrews that she would be expected to show far more initiative in the riding of her mounts in future.

Over the concluding stages, Captain Cosmic and Cazza’s Lottery came together due to Cazza’s Lottery shifting in.

Ms J. Moroni, rider of fourth placegetter Purge, was severely reprimanded for failing to ride her mount out to the end of the race. Stewards did not believe Ms Moroni’s actions affected the result of the race.
