Race 1 – FREELANCE CHRISTMAS MAIDEN HANDICAP - 1050 metres:
Acting on a report from the Club’s farrier who advised Stewards that Abassi Girl was unsatisfactorily plated for racing and as it was not possible to replate the mare due to time constraints, Stewards ordered the withdrawal of Abassi Girl 12.50pm. Subsequently the stewards' ordered the following deductions to betting. All monies bet for a win and/place and concession betting on Abassi Girl to be refunded. All successful bets on the horses prior to the time of withdrawal of Abassi Girl were subject to the following deductions in the dollar from the face value of the ticket: Win bets 7 cents, place bets 8 cents, and quinella bets 16 cents. All monies bet after the stewards' declaration of withdrawal to be paid at face value of the ticket. Trainer P Boag was fined $100 for presenting Abassi Girl to race in plates that were unsatisfactory and notified him that his horses must be plated in accordance with the Rules in future.
On jumping away Jugahru was hampered when tightened for room between Little Impulsive and Belasca, both of which shifted ground.
S McGovern, rider of Jugahru, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding in that near the 300 metres he permitted his mount to shift out when not clear of Belasca, thereby taking that mare out onto Worthy Band, resulting in both those runners being severely hampered and taken out off their course. S McGovern was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence midnight 8th December 2007 and to expire midnight 26th December 2007, a total of 3 picnic racemeetings. In arriving at penalty Stewards took into account S McGovern’s guilty plea and his outstanding riding record.
Over the concluding stages The Earlwood Mob, which was initially taken in slightly by Brown Is Gold, then shifted in away from that gelding and had to be eased off the heels of Madam Grace.
L Taylor, rider of fourth placegetter Madam Grace, was severely reprimanded for failing to ride his mount out to the winning post. Stewards did not believe that L Taylor’s actions affected the result of the race.
Race 2 – THE MASON IZA OPEN TROPHY RACE - 1050 metres:
On arrival on course M Murray, trainer of Breezy path, requested a veterinary examination of that gelding. Breezy Path was passed fit to race.
Bunbrea was slow to begin.
S Wicks, rider of Count the Bites, explained to the Stewards that he had been instructed to ride the gelding back in the field, as he had done when that gelding won at Woolamai at its previous start, however Count The Bites did not travel well in the early stages and got further out of his ground than intended. Wicks added that he started to place Count The Bites under pressure at the 800 metres and that he was then obliged to race extremely wide to obtain clear running rounding the home turn. Wicks further stated that he believed the gelding was now looking for further ground. Stewards noted Wicks’ explanation however notified him that he would be expected to show more initiative earlier than he did on this occasion and to leave no room for query in the riding of his mounts in future. A veterinary examination of Count The Bites revealed no abnormalities.
