Weather Takes its Toll
The wild weather over the long weekend certainly took its toll on racing throughout the State and Picnic Racing did not escape the damage. The Alexandra Cup meeting was cancelled despite the day turning out to be sunny and humid. Even a crowd turned up and decided to spend the day relaxing at the track and betting on the Interstate races.

Hinnomunjie got their Cup meeting away on Saturday but the Swifts Creek meeting was abandoned on the Monday. Last year fires and this year floods !!

Balnarring managed to miss the brunt of the storm and the track was rated slow but the crowd was well down on past long weekend meetings. The fields did hold up and the racing was good but the wet track took its toll on many of the runners.

Picnic racing in the high country over the Labour Day weekend focuses on the Hinnomunjie track midway between Omeo and Benambra on the Saturday and at Swifts Creek for the Tambo Valley meeting on Monday.

This year the Hinnomunjie meeting drew a big crowd in delightful weather with good fields limited by only six jockeys available to take rides.

Anthony Boyd rode a double winning the Hinnomunjie Cup on Champion Chestnut and Danielle Daniel rode a treble winning again on Mr Martindale for Alec and Reg Manning and riding a double for Bob Triplow on Go Zam and Ready for Kerry who were both last start winners at the Drouin meeting.

The only other winning rider was Mathew Corbisiero who was successful having only his second ride at the picnics having just gained his ticket to ride.

The storm and rains hit the night after the races and this washed out Monday’s meeting at Swifts Creek.
